What is a .SQM file?
The most common data format on the web.
An SQM file is a Microsoft Software Quality Metrics telemetry file, an XML file generated automatically by Windows and Microsoft applications such as Office and Windows Live Messenger to collect anonymous usage statistics for Microsoft's Customer Experience Improvement Program. Open it with Notepad if you need to inspect the contents, but there is nothing actionable in it. SQM files can be safely deleted; they contain no personal data.
